Wildlife Safaris

With 16 wildlife sanctuaries and five national parks nestled in the Western Ghats, Kerala offers countless options for wildlife safaris. The rich flora and fauna as well as the unique topography of the sanctuaries make every safari truly special. Enjoy majestic views of the forest perched comfortably on the back of an elephant. Follow a tiger trail. Come face to face with wild boars, otters, exotic birds and more. A boat safari through the Periyar Lake will enable you to spot herds of elephants, sambar deer etc. by the water's edge.

  • Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary,Idukki
    Sprawled across 777 sq.km, Periyar Sanctuary's unique geomorphology, diverse wildlife and beautiful landscape make it a hotspot for wildlife safaris. Declared as Tiger Reserve, the Sanctuary's 26 sq.km artificial lake, which serves as a watering hole for the animals during summer, adds to the experience.
  • Gavi Wildlife Sanctuary, Pathanamthitta
    Developed as an exclusive ecotourism project Gavi's evergreen forests shelter exotic wildlife including the Lion Tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Marten as well as rare flora including Podocarpus Wallichinia. The forests are also home to over 320 species of birds- the Great Indian Hornbill sunbird, wood pecker and more.
  • Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    Declared as a project elephant site and rich in bio diversity Wayanad sanctuary is where you can see elephants roaming freely. Tigers, deer and wild boars can also be sighted occasionally at this Sanctuary that shelters flora typical of the South Indian moist deciduous forests and west coast semi evergreen forests.

Trek and Camp

  • Agasthyakoodam,Thiruvananthapuram
    Located 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram, Agasthyakoodam is the second highest peak in southern India at 1,868m. The trek through the forest interspersed with grassland, waterfalls and steep climbs is truly magical
  • Parambikulam,Palakkad
    Parambikulam offers two fascinating trekking options. The cochin state Forest Tramway trek takes you along a century-old tramway route, giving you a unique opportunity to spot rare wild life. A naturalist's delight is the Kariyanshola Trail that takes you through evergreen forests that shelter endangered medical plants and orchids.
  • Munnar,Idukki
    An undulating lush terrain makes Munnar a trekker's delight. The six hour trek, through butterfly forest to Meesapulimala at 2,624m, followed by a descend through tea and eucalyptus plantations to the scenic campsite at Rhodo valley, is one of the highlights.

Cycling

There is nothing like Cycling to discover Kerala up close and personal-be it the land's culture, history or natural beauty. Kerala has it all for the cycling enthusiast- rustic country lanes, winding paths across lush paddy fields, dusty tracks that lead to remote hamlets, exotic trails that run along tea gardens, spice plantations and rubber estates... a friendly people make the experience even more delightful.   • The Hill Trail
    Cycle form the lowland forest of Thattekkad in Ernakulam, along the banks of Periyar and spice-scented mountain roads to reach the foothills of the Western Ghats at Adimali. Make your way to the hills of Munnar and from there to the wildlife sanctuary at Chinnar. Later, ride to lower elevations to reach the waterfalls at Vazhachal and Athirapally.
  • Beach - Backwater Tour
    Pedal through filling villages and coconut Plantations towards the Marai Beach in Alappuzha. Go past small villages, markets temples and paddy fields to discover rustic Kerala at its best in Alappuzha. Cycle through the villages of Kuttanadu, the rice bowl of Kerala and the only place where farming is done below sea level.
  • Wild Tracks
    Ride along tea and spice plantations, quaint villages and tropical rainforests in Wayanad. Lush Vythiri located 2,600 ft above sea level, the quaint town of Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady- the forests of which are noted for its scenic beauty are some of the spots where possibilities for cycling abound, thanks to the beauty and diversity of the Landscape.

Off - Road Jaunts

A much sought-after venue for India's premier off-road events, Kerala has the right terrain to put your driving skills to the test. Rugged land, slushy trails, gentle canals, shallow river beds, dense forests, green valleys and mist-capped mountains. Take them all on two wheelers or 4x4s of your choice. The boulder -filled terrain of Ponmudi in Thiruvananthapuram, the steep rocky cliffs and stream crossings of Peerumedu in Idukki district, the raw and rustic landscape of wayanad. Kerala presents immense possibilities for the adventurous.

  • Wayanad
    Spared across 2,132 sq.km on the lofty Western Ghats, Wayanad's interesting mix of hills, forests, savannahs and plantations makes it perfect for off road events. With an altitude that varies from 700 to 2,100 meters above sea level, Wayanad has some exciting route with wide variations in terrain including some of the steepest hills and virgin forests.
  • Munnar
    With its varied scenery, mountain climbs and bends, Munnar is a favourite with racing enthusiasts. Shell advance, the leading motorcycle lubricant brand, unveiled Coorg to Munnar as the world's ultimate Riding wonder. Thanks to the demanding routes across its rugged landscape, Munnar is the venue for many prestigious off -road events like the Mahindra Great Escape.

Paragliding

Get a bird's eye view of Kerala, at nearly 6,000 ft above sea level. The paragliding season starts from September and offers great flying conditions until January and again, from March to May. Float like a cloud and take on the blue skies and chat with the birds. Vagamon in the district of Idukki is fast emerging as the paragliding hotspot. The paragliding Grand Prix held during September every year brings together paragliders form across the world.

Paragliding Festival 2015

Kerala Tourism under the aegis of Kerala Adventure Tourism promotion society is conducting the Mathrubhumi Yathra 7th International Paragliding Carnival at Vagamon, Idukki. The festival is in association with Fly Vagamon club, Vagamon destination management committee and Paragliding Association of India. The event dates are from 21 Feb 2015 until 1 Mar 2015 at Vedikuzhi suicide point. The aim of the event is to promote Vagamon as an adventure destination for Keralites and for inbound tourists. Over 50 national and international paragliding pilots are expected to take part in the carnival. The carnival ground will open its gates from 12 PM until 6 PM during the festival. Visitors can expect to see a spectacular acrobatic show every day with international pilots led by Calin Popa from Romania. Visitors also have the option to go for a joyride with expert pilots and really become a part of the event."We are excited to organize this year’s carnival. For the first time acrobatics shows are being arranged. The visitors also will have a good opportunity to take to the skies.

  • Vagamon, Idukki
    Kolahalamedu hill, located 4km from Vagamon, provides the perfect platform for paragliding. Over 3,000 feet in height, it has a 10km long ride that is perfect for take-off and landing. Cool climes, tea garden, meadows, grass lands and shola forests add to the charm of Vagamon.
  • Varkala Thiruvananthapuram
    Located about 50 km north of Thiruvananthapuram city. Varkala beach with its magnificent cliffs is another destination that is been sought after as a paragliding site.

Jeep Safari

Gavi natural environment untouched by modernity is the home to wildlife and birds. Tourist visiting Gavi can enjoy the sight of this wildlife in their natural habitat through Vehicle safaris to take a glimpse of the endangered species like Nilgiri Tahr and Lion-tailed macaque if you are lucky, Kerala’s favorite elephants among others. Gavi is a home to over 260 species of birds including the great pied hornbill, woodpecker, and kingfishers. Gavi is a birdwatchers delight.
